We’ve heard many myths about inflatable sup boards. Let’s take the most popular one – durability, and check out if the inflatable paddle boards last for a long time or no.
The short answer – yes, they are super durable and will last you for many years.
But at the same time, it’s a bit more complicated.
Why? Well, there are multiple points to consider.
- Do you abuse your board really hard on rocks or other sharp edges
- How do you care for it
- Way of storing
Resistance to tears and punctures
The most common concern among people is how it holds up against scratches around sharp edges and objects.
Sure, as it’s an inflatable, there’s always a chance for a puncture. But the latest SUP boards are of such high quality that it’s less probable if you’re careful.
That’s unless you’re trying hard by intentionally running in all sorts of obstacles.
But there’s a big difference between inflatable and solid boards on how they handle such collisions.
You could severely damage your solid paddle board if you’d slam it into some obstacles. Even dropping it on, e.g., the concrete floor, could leave some marks.
Inflatable SUP, on the other hand, would bounce back without any harm come to it.
SUP storing and care for it
Caring is another point that could significantly affect the lifespan of the SUP.
After each use, clean it from any sand that’s stuck to it and dry it thoroughly before storing it.
It’s not that big of a deal if you, e.g., have to get back home fast. But when you’re putting it aside for a longer-term, do make sure that’s it’s clean and dry.
Also, remember to deflate the SUP board otherwise, it will wear out after a while. Theoretically, you could store it inflated, but it’s not advised.
Most probably, that will also be mentioned in the instructions that come along with the board.
New or used inflatable paddle board?
Which is better? Can you save money by purchasing a used one? Or are you putting yourself at risk with a second-hand SUP.
The best option is to buy a brand new sup board. That way you’ll get a warranty along with it.
It usually starts from a year and goes up to three. But that varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.
For example, iRocker offers a 2-year warranty for its boards.
However, there is always an option to get a used inflatable paddle board if you’re short on funds for a new one or want to save some money.
Only then there is no guarantee if something does happen to it.
Brand new paddle board can be a significant investment after looking at SUP prices. So a used paddle board could look like a very tempting purchase to save a couple of hundreds.
But there’s a big but!
Be cautious with second-hand inflatable sup boards. You don’t know how the previous owners cared about them. Or if there already have been any repairs.
If you do go with this option – inspect the sup board very carefully for possible defects.
That could save you from losing hundreds of dollars.
A new inflatable sup board would definitely last longer than a used one.
All in all, inflatable paddle boards last for a long time if you care for them and don’t abuse them.
